A Walk in Someone Else's Shoes

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."
-- Atticus Finch

[ Overview ]

In this assignment, you will take Atticus' advice literally by examining a shoe and inferring as much as you can about the owner.

[ Directions ]

  1. Examine your assigned shoe and complete the shoe handout. Upload this document to Engrade when you're finished; it will count as a participation grade.
  2. Based on the questions in the handout and your mental image of the owner, write a rough draft of one of the following creative writing pieces:
    • A poem (metered or free verse, rhyming or non-rhyming)
    • A vignette (i.e. a single prose scene from a short story)
    • A monologue (in which you take on the character of the shoe owner)
  3. Revise and edit your rough draft.
  4. Conduct peer conferences in your groups when your rough draft is finished.
  5. Save your finished piece as LastnameFirstname_ShoeActivity.doc and submit it on Engrade.

[ Requirements ]

  • You must complete the questions in step one before beginning your rough draft.
  • You must choose one of the creative writing options specified in step two, and your writing must be based on your assigned shoe (and the related questions).
  • Your piece (poem, vignette, or monologue) must be 300-500 words in length.
  • Your piece must use proper MLA formatting (i.e. Times New Roman 12 point font, double spacing, 1" margins, proper heading).

[ Due Date and Grading ]

Your work will be graded primarily on the amount of detail used in examining the shoe and the creativity with which you use those details to create a character and present that character in writing. The rough draft of your creative piece is due on Monday, March 26. Peer conferences will happen that day. Your final draft is due Wednesday, March 28 and will count toward the Papers and Projects portion of your grade.
