[ Overview ]

In this assignment, you will research an aspect of our county's history in order to gain background knowledge and potential inspiration for your Neuse River Anthology piece.

[ Directions ]

  1. Browse the markers listed on the North Carolina Highway Historical Marker webpage for Craven County. Choose three that you would be interested in learning more about and rank your choices. We will work out research assignments as a class.
  2. Read the information about your assigned Craven County historical event.
  3. Identify key ideas and related events mentioned in your event's description. (Think about what questions people might have after reading the description, or what they might want to learn more about.)
  4. Research these key ideas and related events. Take notes so your can effectively paraphrase these sources later, and be sure to keep track of your source information so you can give proper citations. Also, remember the "site:edu" method of filtering out unreliable Google results.
  5. Write up your findings. Your first paragraph(s) should summarize the information about your historical marker; the following paragraphs should explain the related information you researched. (Your write-up should include proper in-text citations and a Works Cited page.)
  6. Save your written work as LastnameFirstname_CCHR.doc and upload it to TurnItIn.

[ Requirements ]

  • Your write-up must include a summary of your historical event and additional research about at least three (3) related events/people/ideas.
  • Your write-up must use proper MLA formatting (12 point Times New Roman font, double spacing, 1-inch margins, in-text citations and Works Cited page).
  • Your write-up must be 1.5 - 2 pages in length.

[ Due Date and Grading ]
